Game Write-up from guest writer Elissa

The wind was biting--not just the "oh, it's the winter" kind of wind, mind you, but the "oh crap, I just turned my head into the wind while inhaling and my nostrils froze shut" kind of wind. Luckily the ice was some of the best in recent outdoor broomball memory.  Before the start of the game, the opposing team's lack of proper equipment tipped the Sheep that we might expect a lower-level of play from the Ice Devils. Needless to say, we dominated the game and by halftime the score was A Lot to None.   We struggled a bit with the whole "red line in and out" business in the first half, but I see that as a good thing because it allowed the Ice Devils to take the ball on our side of the ice once in a while for the face off. In an effort to even it up a bit, Claudine switched to play with the Ice Devils for the second half.   Even with the addition of Claudine's prowess at wing, the Ice Devils just couldn't catch up and by the end of the game, just about everyone in the flock had an opportunity to score a goal.  The final score was ten to zero.  It was great to have Jodi back after being out last season for the birth of her daughter, Elisabeth.  Also, thanks to Kayne for providing fan support and occasionally playing the roll of the wall during our after-game scrimmage.

Play of the Game

The play of the game goes to Claudine for being willing to shed her wool and play for the bad guys.  We'll have to ask what she saw in the Sheep from the other side.

Game Write-up

This was a great match-up.  SIECO was last year's runner up in the 8 on 8 championship game.  The first half set the stage for the game - a defensive battle that saw most of the action in transition.  SIECO had a great goalie who liked to hit the wings on the boards right at the red line.  The snow was falling so the ice was super slick.  If you didn't have your momentum going the right direction, you had no chance of getting the ball.  SIECO scored one in the first half on a deflection of the Shepherd's leg to the weak side wing.  The Sheep made half time adjustments and shut down their clearing pass to the boards.  They were forced to try and run the ball up the boards, which was much less effective.  The Sheep also did a better job of running the ball up the rink and taking advantage of using the boards to push off.  The Sheep controlled the ball a little more than SIECO, but the Sheep also saw their share of chaos on the defensive zone.  But Scott kept us in this game by shutting out SIECO in the second half.  The Shepherd took an outside shot in the second half that missed and came all the way out to Kayne who was alone out in front.  He picked his spot and the score was 1-1.  That is how it ended.  A good start to the best of three series this year.

Play of the Game

Player of the game goes to Scott for holding SIECO to only one goal.  He had some great blocks and made all his passes with confidence.  Nice game Scott!

Week 3 - Jan 18, 2005

Results

6:30 pm, Sheep defeat Dangerous Guys 10-0.

7:30 pm, SIECO defeat Ice Devils.

Game Write-up

Scott got most of his action this night in the other net.  He played about 1/3 of the game for the other team and got peppered by the Sheep.  Brian nailed him square in the helmet from 10 feet away.  Despite the net being a danger zone with the Sheep on fire as they were, the Dangerous Guys stepped back up to the plate (in this case the net) in order to have more playing time.  I guess we know where their name comes from.

Play of the Game

Player of the game goes to Jodi for scoring on her own goalie with a sweet one-timer.  Incidentally, Scott was playing for the other team at the time.  "I'm pretty sure she didn't pay him off," says Jodi's twin, Jessi.

7:30 pm, Sheep defeat SIECO 4-3 (OK Ann - I'll give you credit for that last goal!)

Game Write-up

In the second game of this three-game series, the Sheep played tough as a team throughout the game and really turned it on in the second half.  After being down one goal, the Sheep scored four goals before SIECO snuck in one more (the first two Sheep goals came from none other than The Shepherdess, Jessi Nikko).  Each goal seemed to further inspire the Sheep.

It was tough to get and keep your footing in some of the wettest conditions ever experienced by the Sheep.  Defensively, the Sheep still managed to get back and help out whenever needed and when they couldn’t, Scott was there to make the saves.  Great game Scott!  Offensively, there were a number of great opportunities – Joe and Jessi had some great passing combinations.   Despite some valiant efforts by the SIECO goalie, the Sheep still managed to get 4 (really 5) goals in the net.  The goals were primarily second chances as the goalie’s initial saves usually came back out in front of the net.

The biggest strength of the Sheep was overall team effort.  Everybody played hard and with enthusiasm.

Ann Miller gets credit for a goal in the last minute of the game.  The goal wasn't officially counted because the ref didn't understand the delayed whistle concept.  But we'll give it to you!

Play of the game

The Sheep managed to keep the ball entirely in SIECO’s zone for the first shift of the second half.  No matter who had the ball, it kept coming back to Rich.  After a couple of chances, Rich blasted in a goal that the goalie never saw.

Week 5 - Feb 1, 2005

Results

6:30 pm, Sheep defeat SIECO 5-4.

7:30 pm, Ice Devils vs. Dangerous Guys.

Game Write-up

The Shepherd had 5 reasons not to play this game:

    1. Most of us were worn out from the weekend tourney

    2. The smog alert was as high as it has ever been

    3. The rink had standing water

    4. We had played SEICO at least two other times this year

    5. The bar was sounding better and better

But we did end up playing, and although we all got wet and cold, it was still a great game.  The Sheep gave up the first goal on the first shift of the night.  Things didn't look good.  But then the Sheep managed to score 4 straight goals in about 5 minutes.  The score was 4-1 and victory was within reach.  But SIECO turned on the offense as the first half came to a close.  The Sheep broke down defensively, mainly due to a constantly shifting SIECO offense and some weak defensive Sheep shifts.  The score was 4-3 at the half.  The Sheep had a defensive pep talk during halftime and put it to use in the second half.  SIECO managed a final goal to tie the game, but the game winner came on a breakaway with the Shepherd and Shepherdess combining for the score.  So the Sheep ended the regular season 4-0-1 and took home the league title!

Play of the game

While offense often gets the glory in broomball because of the obvious scoring, defense in the second half is what saved the Sheep tonight.  So the play of the game goes to the tried and true defensive Sheep who stepped up in the second half:  Elissa, Kathleen, Matt and Neil.  Nice job defense!

Minneapolis 8 on 8 Outdoor Playoffs, Feb 7-12

The Shepard was only able to play in the first playoff game, which was an 8-2 victory.  After that, I was stuck in Dallas and only able to get game updates via cell phone.  So I don't have write-ups for these games, but I can say that the Sheep had an excellent tournament.  Last year, we made it to the semi final game and lost a heart breaker against team Summit.  This year, we would see Summit in the final at Parade stadium.  The Sheep had great games against Miracle on Ice (8-2), Scandinavian Invasion (7-0), Coastal Seafood (3-2) to make it to the final game.  Claudine, Kathleen and Kayne combined for the 3 goals against Coastal Seafood.  Summit was no match for the Sheep as the flock jumped to a 3-0 lead about half way through the game with goals from Kathleen, Jason and Stacy.  The Sheep played the rest of the game out with a defensive strategy and didn't let Summit do anything in our defensive zone.  Excellent outdoor season.  4-0-1 in the regular season and 4-0 in the playoffs!
