2007 Winter Carnival

Sheep Take Home the Trophy!

The Sheep and the Meerkats were the only two teams to sign up as B level teams.  So we were put in the C level pool play but we were guaranteed to play each other for the chip.

Game 1, Sat, 3:30 pm - Sheep lose to Liberty Bail 2-3.

This game was a replay of the 2005 Winter Carnival game against Liberty Bail.  They played a very physical game and got off to an early lead.  Matt, Brian and Kayne all had just finished playing a men's game immediately prior to this one, so our gas tanks were a little empty.  We started with our guys at defense and decided to change that around half time.  Liberty had a woman in the nets and that gave them a little more speed on the ice.  The Sheep were down 1-3 with 4 minutes left so we pulled our goalie.  We scored to make it 2-3 with a couple minutes left.  We had a few chances in the last couple minutes, but Liberty held on to win.

Game 2, Sat, 6:50 pm - Sheep defeat the Draft Picks 5-3.

Draft Picks were less experienced than Liberty or the Sheep, but they did have some hustle.  They got a couple break-away goals and managed to put 3 on the scoreboard.  The Sheep had the ball control in this game and eventually found the goal 5 times.  Both Kelly and Kayne each had 2 goals in this game and Neil Chaffee had 2 assists.

Game 3, Championship Sat, 8:50 pm - Sheep defeat the Meerkats 1-0 in OT.

This was a hard fought battle.  There were a handful of men on each team who were playing their 6th or 7th game of the day.  It was late, windy and about 0 degrees.  Much of this game was played in the neutral zone.  Each team knew the other quite well and were able to stop momentum before a shot was even fired.  The total saves in this game was only about 3, and that counts both goalies.  Not surprisingly, the game went into overtime.  Kayne, Brian, Jessi and Nicky took the ice for the Sheep.  Chad, Jason, Megan and Jen took the ice for the Meerkats.  The Sheep had the first good chance at scoring with a break down the boards by Brian and a centering pass to a streaking Jessi.  Chad managed to get over in time to make the save.  The Sheep regained possession and Brian was able to shake off his opponent and make a move to the middle.  He was just over the red line and he slid the ball all the way down to score with 12 seconds left.  The Meerkats had a shot in the final seconds that nearly landed in the net.  1-0 in OT.  Nice game!
